About The Good Works Trust Grocery

Social Supermarkets - Bridging the Gap

Social supermarkets are an alternative to emergency food parcels with the aim of reducing food insecurity and dependency. Offering a more dignified experience, clients contribute a “within their means koha (donation)” and the Social Supermarket bridges the gap between need and sufficiency.
Using a combination of purchased, donated and rescued food our “Grocery” offers food at substantially discounted prices to individuals and families wanting a “hand up” not a hand-out. The GWT Grocery is available to clients via an agency or social worker referral.
Clients use an online order form to select their groceries, they pay their koha and collect their order from their chosen collection point on Wednesdays.

In their own words…

I’ve had to adjust from a two income household to loosing my job during divorce as I no longer have help with the kids and am temporarily on the sole parent benefit. At the same time our rent has increased.
Grocery shop has been a lifesaver for my family. It has saved us so much money and the produce is consistently good quality with the lovely surprise of added extras that would otherwise go to waste elsewhere. My kids are delighted to see what comes in our parcel each visit. The produce is healthy and an upgrade from simply tinned foods. The staff are always friendly and it feels comfortable with no sense of shame. It also feels good to pay a Koha vs the judgment felt from hand outs.

Day to day cost of living is unbearable. The stress and toll it is taking on most households but in particular families like me that have recently escaped an abusive relationship with 4 children is taking its toll especially through the school holidays. This service has saved my mental health aswell as put food in mine and my households mouths.

Thank You! This is so helpful to be able to choose. It also saves on waste as we didnt each much of what was in the food parcels we received.
